Kolkata is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located on the east of Hoogly River. The city was formerly the capital of British India in the nineteenth century and has the oldest operating port in India, which was an important military port during World War II. Kolkata is the third-most populous metropolitan city of India; it’s the principal commercial, cultural and educational center of the Eastern part of India.
Kolkata has many buildings in architecture in Indo-Islamic and Indo-Saracenic styles. In fact, Kolkata has the highest number of heritage buildings in the country as the Indian Museum holds large collections that showcase Indian history and art. Also, there is Marble Palace-a classic example of a European-style mansion, the world-famous Victoria Memorial- built by the British, and The National Library one the largest public libraries in India.
Kolkata is also fondly called as “cultural capital of India”.It is also the birthplace of many well-renowned authors, poets, and socialists like Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Michael Ram Mohan Roy, Swami Vivekananda, and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.
